A couple (that I’ve spotted) of the reviews of iClone suggest I’m using it to capture people’s full API keys. I’m not. If you don’t believe me, then feel free to log the traffic coming out of your iPhone/iPod. There should only be connections going to the EVE API servers, the EVE image servers, and possibly some to Apple (though I’m not sure what that’s for). In addition, CCP logs API access per-account.

As I’ve stated on the E-O forums I do any in-game publicity on my coding alt, and people who’ve met me at Fanfest will know my in-game affiliation. However, I do iClone for fun, and don’t want to risk tarnishing that by abusing the trust people put into using their keys with the app. There’s precedent for people in alliances doing third party apps: EVEMon was originally written by a goon, and as far as I know hasn’t done anything untoward with anyone’s key (or login details, as your full account login was needed before the API came along).

Why an alt then? Seemed like a good idea at the time, and I’ve used him as the face for coding related side projects ever since.

Will I ever write code for iClone that sends me keys? Yes. At some point, fuelled by my complete lack of ability to focus on just one thing, I’m probably going to investigate push notifications. Skill training notifications will need a limited key, Mail and POS alerts will need the full key. In either case, there’s going to be an obvious warning (chances are it’ll be red, stripy or both) that you’re about to be giving your keys to me so you won’t stumble into it by accident!

There are a couple of potential outstanding issues with regard to industry job statuses sometimes displaying incorrectly – I’m still looking into these. Also, a few of you have reported adding accounts is behaving less smoothly than it ought – I’ll be trying to improve the documentation surrounding this area, especially with regard to syncing with Windows machines.

As you may have noticed, the iClone website’s been given a bit of a makeover, with more integrated support pages, blog and forum. No doubt there’ll be more tweaks to come, but I think I’m at the stage where the site now enhances the app rather than detracting from it by forcing people to interact with a fairly hardcore developer-centric support system.

Shouldn’t I be working on the new release of the iPhone app? Well, I am as well. Refresh performance is much improved, the new data dumps are integrated, and I’m currently polishing the new wallet detail panes, along with keeping an eye on the performance of the wallet queries. This isn’t getting released till I’m happy with the load times on the Worst Possible Test Device(tm) – a 1st generation iPod touch, which (I believe) has the slowest CPU of any of the released iPhone OS devices.

Why a new website then? Well, the key to that is in the word ‘working‘ in the question above. iClone is a personal project, and so fits around my day job, which has to be first priority. At work we use trac for bug tracking, and during the working day I’m a slave to the ticket. It’s efficient, it keeps things organised, it enables the usual cat-herding of programmers to be made less of a pain for the people in charge. However, it has the knock-on effect of making any interaction with bug-tracking software outside of work seem like, well, work. So, over the next few days I’m going to be closing off the old iClone bug tracking pages, and redirecting them to this new site. I’m still more than open to suggestions and feedback, and I think it’s going to motivate me to be more responsive in responding to bugs and feature suggestions – both direct mail and submissions to the contact form will end up in my inbox, and I won’t have ticket admin to sap my enthusiasm. As an added bonus, with the new support pages I no longer have to <del>suffer</del> interact with wiki-markup, so I’m more likely to keep the documentation up to date, which can’t be a bad thing, and the iPhone skin for the pages will make them far more useful.

Hopefully I’ll be posting about 1.2.1 being submitted soon!

Version 1.2.0 was submitted to the app store last night. Issues with iTunes Connect meant it couldn’t be submitted earlier, but there’s an off-chance it’ll be approved before I disappear to Fanfest.

One change that won’t be popular in this release is the dropping of support for iPhones and iPods with 2.x firmwares. This was a tough decision to make as the new features available in the 3.x SDK didn’t make the choice an automatic one, even if they generally make life more pleasant for both user and coder alike. In the end the lack of simulator support in Snow Leopard, along with the lack of personal devices with the old firmware to test on made the decision for me. If this change affects you then I apologise, but recommend you upgrade as the new firmware features are worth it in my opinion – fingers crossed the recent proposed changes to the US accounting rules mean that Apple can drop the ridiculous iPod update charge.

The release notes are:

New in version 1.2.0:

Apocrypha 1.5.0 static data dump.

New UI themes

Industry Jobs tab

Wallet Journal tab

Market Orders tab

Fixed in version 1.2.0:

Fix for account editing crash

Improved asset scrolling performance

Various stability fixes
